Your situation

Choose by situation

Each scenario starts from what you have and what you want to do next.

  • Start with Tunepactan unreleased MP3 that needs a release plan
  • Start with Tunebata released track, or a file that is not an MP3
  • Start with vocalremover.orga producer checking several files

Start with Tunepact

Scenario 1: an unreleased MP3 that needs a release plan

You have a finished mix of a song that is not out yet. You want the tempo and key for your notes and a clearer idea of who the song is for.

  1. 1Upload the MP3 to the BPM Finder or Song Key Finder.
  2. 2Read the estimated BPM and key. No signup is needed for this step.
  3. 3Continue into the Tunepact Song DNA preview for genre, mood and audience direction.
  4. 4Use a full Song DNA report when you are ready to plan positioning and promotion.

The free result is BPM, key and a preview. The complete Song DNA report, with named similar artists and detailed marketing opportunities, needs a Pro or Premium plan.

Start with Tunebat

Scenario 2: a released track, or a file that is not an MP3

You want the key of a song that is already on streaming services, or your bounce is a WAV or FLAC file.

  1. 1For a released song, search Tunebat’s database by title and artist.
  2. 2For your own file, open the Tunebat Analyzer and add it in your browser.
  3. 3Use the Camelot value if you are planning a harmonic DJ mix.

Database values describe the released recording. If your version differs, such as a live take or remix, analyze the file instead.

Start with vocalremover.org

Scenario 3: a producer checking several files

You have a folder of loops, stems or demos and need tempo and key for each, then want to shift one to match a session.

  1. 1Add your files to the vocalremover.org Key & BPM Finder; the site describes adding several at once.
  2. 2Note the key, scale and BPM for each file.
  3. 3Use its pitch and tempo changer to transpose or retime a file, or tap tempo to double-check the beat.

The pitch, tempo and tap tools are separate pages on the same site, not part of the finder result.

Before you trust a number

How to check a reading

Every detector gives an estimate. When two tools disagree, the cause is usually one of these.

Half-time and double-time

A track read as 70 BPM by one tool and 140 BPM by another is usually the same pulse counted at a different level. Tap along to the snare or kick for a few bars; whichever number matches how you count the groove is the one to use. Your DAW session tempo is the best reference when you have it.

Ambiguous keys

A minor key shares its notes with its relative major, so A minor and C major can both look right to an algorithm. Listen for the chord that feels like home at the end of phrases. Songs with key changes or modal harmony may have more than one valid answer.

Try a reading yourself with the BPM Finder or the Song Key Finder.

How we’ll test accuracy

This page compares documented features. We have not yet published hands-on results for Tunepact, Tunebat, vocalremover.org, so it does not name an accuracy winner.

When we publish tests, they will follow this method:

  • The same permission-cleared recordings in every tool
  • Test date, browser, file format, duration, file size and account state recorded for each run
  • Processing time and the exact result captured with a screenshot
  • Tempo checked against the original session tempo, and tonal center reviewed by a musician

Agreement between tools is not proof of accuracy. Two detectors can share the same mistake.

Beyond BPM and key

Your BPM and key are two parts of the song

Two songs can share a tempo and key and still reach completely different listeners. Tunepact Song DNA describes what your song is, who may connect with it and how to promote it.

Questions

BPM and Key Finders Compared: FAQ

Accuracy, unreleased music, signup and audio handling.

We have not published a controlled accuracy test, so this guide does not name an accuracy winner. Agreement between tools is not proof of accuracy either; check results against a known session tempo and a musician’s ear.

All three can read a file you own. Tunebat and vocalremover.org both state that their finders process audio in the browser. Tunepact uploads the MP3, keeps it private, and adds Song DNA analysis for planning the release.

Tunepact shows BPM and key without an account, and its free account adds 3 Song DNA previews. Tunebat and vocalremover.org both offer free readings; check each site for current account requirements. Tunebat describes extra data and higher limits on a paid subscription.

Tempo can be read at half or double speed, and a minor key shares its notes with its relative major. Different algorithms resolve those choices differently, which is why the verification steps on this page matter.
